The hot list: Trending summer jackets

Ready to defrost your warm-weather wardrobe? The time has finally come to get out of hibernation mode, pack away our puffer coats and thermal leggings to make way for our lighter (and brighter) layers.

Whether you’re looking to invest in classic hero pieces (read: denim jackets and trench coats) or viral must-haves (read: barn and suede jackets), keep scrolling for our edit of spring jackets that aren’t too thick, aren’t too thin and make any outfit cute.

The cool girl must-have? A quilted jacket

A quilted jacket is a Scandi Girl wardrobe staple. Kelsey Stiegman coined them “an integral part of Nordic and European fashion” for InStyle last month and we couldn’t agree more.

Loved by the fashion set for their light cotton fabrics, oversized pockets (!), beautiful patterns and open-front designs; they’re the perfect blend of dopamine dressing and cottagecore charm.

Styling tip: Pinterest predicts that mixing-and-matching maximalist styles is here to stay for SS25 – so no rules apply. Choose a bold geometric print with clashing prints underneath or bring the boho with feminine florals, a white T-shirt, linen trousers or barrel-leg jeans.

The festival favourite: A brown suede jacket

After being showcased on the runways of Miu Miu, Gucci and Prada, and then immediately spotted on the likes of it-girls Bella Hadid, Hayley Bieber and Kendall Jenner, there’s no wonder autumn’s must-have investment piece has stuck around for spring.

A 70s hero piece we can thank bohemian subcultures for, suede jackets are luxuriously soft and sturdy yet lightweight. This year, it’s all about a resurgence of tan and chocolate brown suede jackets in edgy biker silhouettes, oversized blazer-cut shapes or Western-inspired fringed styles that nod to the Moto Boho aesthetic.

Styling tip: Pair yours with a boho woodblock printed dress and suede flats.

In need of some tweed

Want something smart to give your go-to blazer a break? Try a butter-yellow tweed jacket. An ode to the ‘Chanel Jacket,’ it’s perfectly preppy, polished and playful.

Styling tip: Wear with anything you wear your favourite blazer with!

Jean-ius outfitting with a denim jacket

A classic for a reason. Going with absolutely everything, denim jackets have been a uniform to many subcultures throughout the decades. Cowboys made denim jackets a symbol of the American West, teens of the 50s gave them a rebellious twist (seen best on Elvis and Brando), hippies, punks and metalheads customised theirs with patches, pins and badges to show off their favourite bands or cultural values, and 90s grunge fashion adopted acid-wash tones and studded shoulders for an edgy, worn-out finish.

If we had to choose our favourites for this spring? It’s impossible to pick one. Look for those with white-washes, frilly collars or blouson sleeves (to co-ordinate with the barrel jeans everyone’s obsessed with RN).

Utility chic

Defined by its multi-pocket design, durable materials and relaxed fit, the utility jacket has been rightly named because of their practical, utilitarian vibe. Gucci, Mugler and Elie Saab turned to military-style elements and olive-green hues as inspiration for their SS25 shows, reviving this classic casualwear staple with elevated finishes. Glamour’s latest jacket trend report explains, “This spring the funnel neck is every fashion editor’s favourite twist.” If you’re looking to turn basics into stand-out pieces, why not incorporate a jersey utility jacket – with a high neckline and slouchy sleeves – into your looks for spring? We’re thinking zipped-up over a white dress with chic kitten heels.

Puff-sleeves for special occasions

We can’t talk about spring without the mention of wedding season. It’s always a good idea to have a cute little jacket up your sleeve, just in case. And if you need to add a jacket, it might as well make a statement. Think pretty puff sleeves, beautiful jacquard prints, bold leopard prints or fun fringing… Offering more stylish appeal than a cardigan can, occasion-ready layers are also great for modest dressers, mothers of the bride or groom, and other special celebrations like graduations or christenings.

Spring jackets made for rain or shine

Let’s be realistic, we all know how unpredictable the weather is in the UK, especially in spring. Cue: The barn jacket, SS25’s answer to practical, comfy and cool. Sported by members of the Royal Family and the likes of Dua Lipa , barn jackets give any outfit an English country aesthetic we love.

Styling tip: if you’re going to Glastonbury this year, you’ll be giving all the Alexa Chung vibes if layered over a yellow dress

The days of ditching fashion for functionality are over; now’s the prime time to show off the jackets that compliment, emphasise and elevate our outfits. For more spring jacket inspiration, browse our latest collection.
