Local Icons: Virginia Nieto, Founder of Emonk Ibiza

Whilst shooting our summer collection in Ibiza, our crew couldn’t get enough of Emonk, a boho boutique selling the kind of shoes and accessories that are synonymous with Ibizan style. Here, we chat to Emonk founder, Virginia Nieto, about the inspiration for her designs and how they’re brought to life. Read her story and shop her collection below. 

What does Ibiza represent to you? 

Ibiza represents my home, freedom of expression, magic, a way of life, secret beaches, hippy markets and endless Mediterranean sunsets.  

You take your inspiration from your travels, which is something we can relate to. Is there a place you find yourself returning to again and again? 

India is a place that brings me the most inspiration. It’s so unique, with its rich ethnicity from ancient crafts and places, the colours, the people and their way of expressing their spirituality. 

When and where are you at your most creative? 

At my home in silence, connected to earth in the woods, in my backyard observing nature and its majesty.

Your designs are unmistakably Ibizan – why do you think the free-spirited bohemian aesthetic continues to be so popular here? 

It’s a lifestyle, a way of expressing our inner state of freedom – there are no specific rules you need to follow. We’re flowing in harmony with the island’s rhythm. 

In your pieces, you combine tribal jewellery and vintage textiles – how do you source these things? 

By travelling around the world and exploring different cultures, local markets and collaborating with local artisans. 

All your shoes and accessories are made by hand in Ibiza. Can you tell us a little more about that process and who makes them? 

We have a workshop where everything is handcrafted by our team here in Ibiza. We have a beautiful team that’s been creating with us for more than a decade now. 

You describe Las Dalias Ibiza, the hippy market, as your favourite place on earth. What makes it so special? 

The diversity, the talent of every artist. It’s a unique place where there’s inspiration in every step. There’s a feeling of belonging, like we are a big family in harmony sharing our unique talents!  

Any tips on the best stalls to visit? 

Flor de Vida and its chic bohemian designs, Pena Jewels’ beautiful and delicate creations, and World Family with their colourful handmade collections. 

Who are the women you’re inspired by? 

My mum, a very determined, creative woman who taught me the most beautiful values in life. And Gabriel “Coco” Chanel for her determination, creativity and fashion influence.
