Behind the reception of our head office is a wooden Monsoon sign. It has travelled from our previous location, Lancaster Road, and before that, Winslow Road and Filmer Road. The story behind it is relevant today.

It was Christmas, 1975 and I was on a beach in Kenya. There was an old fisherman carving a piece of wood. I was getting on an African dhow going down the coast for a few days and a friend said to me, "this guy needs work and can carve wood". I had a Monsoon card, so I gave it to him and said, "why don't you do something with this". When I came back, the result was that sign, and whatever else you think of that sign, it is different, it is individual and it was hand-crafted from natural wood. From day one, it was 'broken', so it is not perfect but it is individual, and it just seems to have travelled with the company, from head office to head office.

Monsoon has grown and matured. It is important to reflect on what we have achieved and how we have performed, and it is very important that we communicate it to our people. Our success should not be measured by just increased profitability and sales, but by our other achievements as well. Yes, we have increased our branches, yes, we have increased our profits.

We have also created a wonderful head office for our people and are creating great new branches to service our customers. We do our best at being environmentally friendly and we strive to create products adhering to our own ethical standards as well as the ETI.

We are a good employer and we make a positive contribution to the community with the Monsoon Trust. We believe people are the company's main asset; it is the people who make Monsoon different.
